On Thursday you turned 2 years old. I know it seemed like an uneventful day. Dad was gone and Mom had to run errands, but you did end up with a new toy, expensive treats, and lots of cuddling time. I’m guessing it was at least better than average. We will be having the family over, including your best friend Zen, on Monday for dinner and maybe some fun party games. I’m thinking perhaps a piñata full of liver treats? Or a rousing game of pin-the-tail-on-the-kitty? Maybe not…but I can assure you party hats, fancy food, and lots of love.
I know this year has been a bit crazy, but you seem to have taken it all in stride. Ella took away a lot of your attention but she also has provided you with an, apparently, tasty head to lick. You also spent 4 months touring dog shows and I was certain you would be homesick. Nope. You had a great time hanging out with all the other dogs, especially the ones you toured with. In fact, when we picked you up, you barely acknowledged our existence. You live in the moment and are perfectly content to be either in the show ring or lounging around the house.
I think the biggest change for you was also the best. Now that I am home it’s very rare to find extensive damage done around the house. (Like when you chewed up the legs to all of our dining chairs.) I still find an occasional mangled toy of Ella’s but I’m very pleased at your progress. You’ve never even touched my shoes. Ella, on the other hand, was chewing on my Tommy Hilfiger boots last week. She obviously hasn’t had as much training as you. We’re working on it.
I’ve spent a lot of time reading as much as I can about your breed, trying to understand some of your quirks. I think it’s really helped us become closer. Once I knew that ALL Portuguese water dogs are attached to their owner’s hips, it didn’t bother me as much to have you follow me EVERYWHERE. I still don’t let you into the bathroom with me but I know that you will be there. Right outside the door. Waiting. Wanting to know what I was doing all that time and how could it have possibly been done without you? Now I just pat your head and smile. It’s nice to be loved so much by such a sweet, fluffy guy.
