Lately Ella has been pretty grumpy while riding in the car. It may have something to do with the 9 hour drive, to and from Colorado, she recently endured. I’m not really sure. The only thing that has calmed her down the last few times, is singing “The Wheels on the Bus” over and over again, until she falls asleep or gets distracted.
Last night we were driving home from my mom’s house and she started to cry so I immediately jumped into the song. After we had sung all the verses we knew, she was still crying. I told Tom that the last time this happened I made up a few new verses to keep the song going. Nothing too clever: “the Ella on the bus says da, da, da” and “the Porter on the bus says bark, bark, bark”. Apparently, my ingenious idea intrigued her and she started screaming once I was done, which is her way of saying she wants more. Instead of repeating the old verses, I decided to keep on going with the new ones and they progressively got less and less clever:
For my vegan sister – “the Keeley on the bus says don’t eat meat”
For my sister who works for parks and recreation – “the Kari on the bus hates soccer moms”
For my dancing niece – “the Lucia on the bus says shake your booty”
For our 7 year old’s sense of humor – “the Alyssa on the bus says what’s up chicken butt”
They only got worse from there so I’ll spare you. I definitely need to work on my song writing skills. Next time maybe we’ll include some moral lessons and do a verse about “the Drug Addict on the bus gets 1 to 5 years”.
