I’m not sure how Birdie’s zombie fascination began. We do have a group of ninjas that come to our house a lot and like to inform her of the finer things in life, such as zombies and how to properly defend yourself against them. We also had a run-in with a zombie book while we were in Utah, and ever since then it’s been zombie-this and zombie that. She’s even been drawing them – non-stop. All her usual suspects were coming out on paper, but now with crazy eyes and angry mouths (which apparently indicates zombie-ness).
Per a request on Facebook, Ella agreed to draw her specialty – Zombie Dorothy – for her Uncle Colt. We are sending it off in the mail today, where I’ve been informed it will decorate his office wall.
Click on it to make it larger – the numbers were obviously added by me – here’s the key (as dictated by Birdie herself):
1. Zombie Sun (they are square, she says – that’s what makes it a zombie)
2. Zombie Zombie
3. Zombie Dorothy (with no hair on top because that’s what makes her a zombie, Momma – helllooo!)
4. Zombie Zhu Zhu Pet
5. Zombie Hello Kitty
This may be my favorite drawing of all time.

This makes me happy beyond words. I may have to frame it.
These zombies are fantastic. I think there might be a future in entertainment for Zombie Dorothy… a re-working of the WoO perhaps? Straight to Broadway!
love it! I can totally see her drawings become more graphic later on. KEEP HER AWAY FROM THE RED MARKERS!
Maybe Ella will debut in the main role and make you tons of money!
If you’re going to conquer your demons (zombie demons) then why not use Dorothy, Hello Kitty, and the sun. Also, her monster puppet, with three eyes, from Grampi and Grammi was quickly named Three-eyed Dorothy. It’s her thing…for now.
Oh man that is completely awesome!
I was listening to some successful writer/illustrator on NPR, and suddenly, I could envision a successful series of books, written by Britta (with input from Ella) and illustrated by Ella. If the “Nearsighted Monkey,” who smokes and is a terrible house guest, can make money, why not “Zombie Dorothy and ???” It may not be quite what you had in mind as your next craft project, but why not have a little variety?
I think that’s a fantastic idea! And now I’m very curious about this monkey…
Is it weird I am checking my mail box everyday with the anticipation of Ralphie Parker looking for his Little Orphan Annie Decoder Ring?
Not at all. Zombie Dorothy is awesome. She might be slightly delayed by Veteran’s Day, though.
This is too cool! Really great! Keep up the Zombie art work!
